Harmony Brings Prosperity
This ‘Unity and Harmony’ (Yi Tuan He Qi) New Year painting is a classic representative work of Suzhou Taohuawu woodblock printing. Its concept originated from the ‘Unity and Harmony Diagram’ painted by the Chenghua Emperor Zhu Jianshen in the Ming Dynasty. Later re-created by folk artists, it became an auspicious symbol implying family harmony and social concord.
The center of the composition features a chubby, smiling child with a double topknot hairstyle, wearing a magnificent brocade robe, and holding a horizontal scroll inscribed with ‘Unity and Harmony.’ The overall‘ is endearing and full of festive atmosphere. The plaque above reads ‘Harmony Brings Prosperity,’ highlighting the theme—that ‘Harmony’ is the foundation of conduct, and ‘Union’ is the source of gathering wealth and blessings, symbolizing that harmony in human relations leads to success in all endeavors and a peaceful family ensures smooth sailing in all aspects.
Technically, it inherits the woodblock printing skills of the Song Dynasty, employing the ‘one block, one color’ overprinting method. Its colors are rich but not vulgar, and its lines are fluid yet powerful. It not only retains the folk charm of traditional New Year paintings but also incorporates the elegant style of Jiangnan literati painting. Today, this painting is not only an important part of the national intangible cultural heritage but also serves as a visual carrier conveying ‘Harmony Culture,’ symbolizing the Chinese people’s eternal pursuit of a harmonious life.
